Haswell is a real improvement for laptops with integrated graphics, for desktops it’s barely a sidestep, less than 5% average improvement over Ivy Bridge in CPU-related tasks at the same clock frequency and less than 1% improvement when running games using a discrete graphics card. Anyone with at least a Sandy Bridge in the box should be utterly uninterested …

Intels High End consumer-platform, s.2011, could be more interesting if it weren’t for the fact they haven’t even released the Ivy Bridge-offspin for that platform as of yet. And that one will only be maximum six-core, when it’s Xeon-counterparts have been eigth-core since a long time. In short, desktop computing is standing dead still right now. All that is exciting is happening with portable platforms like smartphones and tablets, and that is it, sad but I guess it is some sort of progress anyway. I will save some money though, as my 2600K-box will be fine for a couple of years more :-)

Granted, there is now an official Linux Steam-client but it doesn’t run my entire game-library on Steam. If I run the Windows Steam-client under Wine instead so do I at least have a chance of getting many games to run. However, it is not as easy as just to install and run the client under Wine as the gui is rather buggy and ie doesn’t display any characters in the menus. But, there is a workaround, to start Steam using some flags. So:

env WINEDEBUG=”fixme-all” WINEPREFIX=”/home/******/.wine/” wine “C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steam.exe” -no-dwrite

Copy that to a CLI and hit enter so does Steam run rather well under Ubuntu 13.04  :-)

I received the service splitter for my Gigabit-connection, which I need for being able to use ip-TV. Of course it didn’t work so well for hosting a server, as it is configured only as a home residential gateway from the scratch, but with a little help from the good folks at Ownit.se I could have it bridged and apparently the site is now up again!

Sadly, so isn’t ip-TV, as they had forgotten to configure the network for my TV-provider Viasat.se. The technicians responsible is of course off for the weekend ,so I have to wait til tomorrow for eventually being able to watch TV in the livingroom once again.

As it turned out, nowadays that isn’t a big catastrophy as many channels ie the national televison broadcast in Sweden have all their programs online for ondemand play. So, yesterday I watched TV through my HTPC using Svtplay.se, it worked terific and I could use the highest quality setting which corresponds to 720P with totally no lag.

Of course I have netflix, voddler and headweb too, so there are alternatives for using a TV-box/card without being an illegal file-shareing type. I definetely prefer legal services and are a big fan of Spotify etc so of course I use those services whenever I can but nevertheless the rest of the family prefers a working TV-box. Let’s hope it starts working tomorrow  :-)

Yes, so it is. Now this closet-server of mine has access to a rather speedy 1000mbit/s-connection up- and down, courtesy of Ownit.se! Real nice to have a fast internet connection at home, but also I hope ip-TV quality to be much better. Up until now I’ve been using ip-TV from Bredbandsbolaget.se via VDSL ~32mbit/s down, forward on I will be using ip-TV directly from Viasat.se on this new fast connection.

Still waiting for the service splitter/router and HD-box from Viasat, so any real improvement is still just a wish. But I hope it will turn out that way. For now I run an old Gigabit-router I had in the house and it works very well with just internet and it is as speedy as can be, but it could be difficult to configure it for ip-TV as the TV-stream isn’t on the public ip-range. So, I need the service splitter before I get the HDTV-box.

Yes, I was, as it happens I started messing around in The Gimp. Here’s the result;

Also,  I received my samples of the TI LM4562NA/NOPB operational amplifier, to test to replace the JRC2114D:s on the Xonar ST. It’s said to give a even more clear sound, if even possible, from “gurus” at head-fi and other places on the web. Who knows? Anyway, I have to test it, cause it’s fun  :-)

The great Xonar STX tweaking thread at head-fi:

But, remember, the risk of being under placebo is more than imminent. It’s most likely. Thoughts on OP-amp rolling in audio gear:

Anyway, I’m not in a hurry to try it, I’ll save it for a very rainy day. The sound out of the stock Xonar ST is already amazing as it is!
